미 전국 40개 주 1600여개 고등학교 상담교사들을 상대로 설문조사한 결과 하버드, MIT, 프린스턴, 예일 대학이 상담교사들이 선정한 우수 대학 공동 1위에 올랐다.

2·3·4위 없는 공동 5위는 브라운, 컬럼비아, 코넬, 스탠퍼드 대학, 공동 9위는 캘리포니아텍(CIT), 다트머스, 듀크, 조지타운, 존스 홉킨스, 노스웨스턴, UC 버클리, 펜실베이니아 대학인 것으로 나타났다.

상담교사들이 뽑은 상위권 대학의 기준은 학교의 명성이나 성적, 실력 등에 근거해 선정했다. 특히 해당 대학의 아카데미 기록, 교과과정, 교수진 편성, 프로그램 특성, 졸업생의 사회 기여도 등을 기준으로 삼았다. 점수는 하위인 1점(Marginal)부터 만점인 5점(distinguished)까지로 나눴다.

이는 ‘US뉴스 앤드 월드리포트’지가 2007년 미 전국 상담교사들을 상대로 설문조사한 결과에 따른 것이다.

We asked guidance counselors from America's Best High Schools to tell us which national universities they think offer the best education to their students. They rated the universities on a scale of 1 to 5 (with 5 being the top score) or marked "don't know" if they were unfamiliar with that particular college.
